Why did germans ever think they were "aryan" when in reality...?

aryan is iranian.... i cant fathom that they overlocked that they aryen people that they werent are iranian/persians... its almost silly to me... and people today that are "white supremesists" and call themselves aryan... lol i just think its funny because they dont even know the etymology of the word
