What is the connection between Aryan race and Indians (Hindus)?

So I've been doing some research and apparently Hitler was a big fan of "Aryan Race" but my Indian friend swears that Aryan is an "Indian" thing. After much googling, I am even more confused. So can anyone clear up the connection between the Aryan race (which I thought was the idea of ideal white race) and what Hindu Indians have to do with it?
